Dear Sir,
While it was great to see our flagship product featured in the media in support of the Climate Change (Scotland) Bill, (Thursday 25th June); and fantastic though it is to have a government seemingly serious about positive movement in the area of CO2 reduction; our elected representatives still can’t duck the fact that they have a way to go to make doing business in renewables as easy as it needs to be.
Renewable Devices is proud to be an Edinburgh based Company that has as its driving passion the desire to make renewable energy accessible for all. Partly with the help of Scottish Government investment we have produced the world’s quietest wind turbine (SWIFT) designed to fit to either a domestic or commercial building, and have an independent energy consultancy arm specialising in turn-key energy solutions. Each Swift turbine is capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 1.2tonnes per annum. It’s a product that the world is very interested in – we have distribution deals in USA, Asia, Australia and much of Europe. If we were to follow traditional business models our logical move would be to up sticks and manufacture abroad, close to our biggest markets – not that we intend to. But how ironic that Scotland has over two-thirds of Europe’s wind resource, and yet we haven’t put the pieces in place to allow for Scottish householders and the Scottish environment to benefit to the same extent as our overseas markets.
Here in the UK, despite the advances announced yesterday the infrastructure isn’t in place to support the public interest in domestic renewable energy solutions. So legislators, if you are really serious, we can achieve that 42% reduction - let’s make it easy to get planning for a domestic renewables; easy and financially more attractive to export electricity to the grid and more attractive for business to invest in renewables.
Regards
Dr C Silverton, Director,
Renewable Devices Swift Turbines Ltd

Renewable Devices Swift Turbines were present as Labour Leader Iain Gray (pictured with a Swift Wind Turbine) and Sarah Boyack MSP met with photographers following the Scottish Government's acceptance of a 42% CO2 emissions reduction target for 2020.
Renewable Devices wholeheartedly support the interim targets, and believe that with the right support for renewable energy technology, a 42% reduction in CO2 emissons is within reach. The Swift Turbine alone can provide up to 40% of an average household in the UK's energy requirement and offset 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Renewable Devices, and their "re-engineered hamster wheel" took part once again in the Edinburgh Raft Race. Last Saturday, the team took to the water with two Swift Wind Turbines crafted into a paddle-steamer. The unique diffuser ring of the Swift Wind Turbine, designed to reduce blade tip noise for near-silent operation, was used to mount paddles and with handles either side, the team were able to manually rotate the turbines and speed (ahem) to victory (well, third place).
Chancellor Alistair Darling officically opened the race, and came to speak with our team about the distinctive raft, admitting "i don't know much about building rafts". Engineer Mark Ravillious (pictured) was more than happy to explain the thinking behind this years entry.
Winning last years "Daftest Raft" with the original "hamster wheel" the team were determined to take this years trophy, but despite coming third overall, are delighted to have been awarded the fastest paddlers 2009!

Standing over
Auckland, New Zealand, at over 320 meters tall, and with views stretching over 80kms
in all directions, the Auckland Sky Tower is not only the city’s most
recognisable tourist attraction and entertainment venue (and the tallest
man-made structure in New Zealand!), but has become the latest prominent business
to join the green revolution, with the breathtaking installation of a SWIFT
Wind Energy System.
The SWIFT, designed
and manufactured by Scottish company Renewable Devices, is the world’s first
silent building mountable wind turbine with unique patented aerodynamic
technology for unprecedented silent, safe and efficient operation.
Designed to bring the
power of wind energy to homes and businesses, in wind speeds of around 6m/s the
SWIFT is estimated to generate 2000kWh of energy annually; up to a half of an
average homes domestic energy use. However in this case, with average winds of
over 7.5m/s the SWIFT could potentially provide the SkyTower complex with over 4000kWh
of energy over the course of the 12 month trial.
In a jaw-dropping
installation, the SWIFT has been fitted onto an existing disused
satellite mast on the top of the top observation level at 220m high.
The SWIFT will initially provide the SkyTower with wind energy for a
pilot period as part of country-wide system trials currently being
carried out by Auckland based Vector Ltd. The SkyTower SWIFT is the 6th
New Zealand site; by far the highest turbine installed in the country.
With unobstructed wind for miles around the SkyTower SWIFT will be
exposed to the most challenging wind conditions.
The installation is yet another landmark job for Edinburgh based
Renewable Devices SWIFT Turbines, who recently completed the largest
micro-wind installation in the UK: a 46 SWIFT installation at
Liverpool's Vesty Bootle Business Park. On the other side of the world,
a SWIFT was recently installed on the top of the Corning Tower, New
York State's tallest building by North American distributor Cascade
Engineering.
